- IN1 - INSTALLATION
-
- To install McAfee Firewall:
-
- - (1) If your computer runs Windows 2000
- Professional, or Windows XP, log on to your
- system as a user with administrative rights.
- You must have administrative rights to
- install this software on your system.
-
- - (2) Insert the McAfee Firewall CD into your
- computer's CD-ROM drive. If the Autorun
- Installation menu does not automatically
- display, go to Step 3. Otherwise, skip to
- Step 4.
-
- - (3) Use the following procedure if the
- Autorun installation menu does not display,
- or, if you obtained your software via
- download at a McAfee web site.
-
- - From the Windows Start menu, select
- Run.
- The Run dialog box displays.
- - Type <X>:\SETUP.EXE in the Run dialog
- text box, and click OK.
- Here, <X> represents the drive letter
- for your CD-ROM drive or the path to
- the folder that contains your
- extracted Firewall files. To search
- for the correct files on your hard
- disk or CD-ROM, click Browse.
- - (4) Before proceeding with the installation,
- Setup first checks to see whether your
- computer is already running the Microsoft
- Windows Installer (MSI) utility running as
- part of your system software.
- - If your computer runs Windows XP,
- Windows Me, or Windows 2000, MSI
- already exists on your system. If your
- computer runs an earlier Windows
- release, you may still have MSI in
- your computer if you previously
- installed other software that uses
- MSI. In either of these cases, Setup
- will display its first wizard panel
- immediately. Skip to Step 5 to
- continue.
- - If Setup does not find MSI or an
- earlier version of MSI is installed in
- your computer, it installs files
- necessary to continue the
- installation, then prompts you to
- restart your computer. Click Restart
- System. When your computer restarts,
- Setup will continue from where it left
- off.
-
- - (5) Refer to steps displayed on the
- Installation Wizard to complete your
- installation.

- IN2 - TESTING YOUR INSTALLATION *
-

- KN1 - KNOWN ISSUES *
-
- - When coming out of standby mode, your
- Internet access may be blocked. To restore
- Internet access, open the Firewall home page,
- click "Stop McAfee Firewall", then click
- the "Start McAfee Firewall".
-
- - The instant messaging program, Yahoo
- Messenger will not be able to communicate
- with the Internet if ICMP is blocked in McAfee
- Firewall. To allow ICMP, open Firewall, click
- Advanced Tasks, click "Configure network
- adapters", select your network adapter,
- click the Adapter settings button, click
- the ICMP tab, select the "Allow all ICMP"
- option, and click OK.
-
- - Firewall is not compatible with the NetBEUI
- protocol in Windows 2000. To correct this,
- uninstall the NetBEUI protocol and configure
- your network to use NetBIOS instead.
-
- - Previous version settings not retained.
-
- If you are upgrading to McAfee Firewall 4.0
- from an older version of this product (3.0
- or older), the Setup program does not retain
- the settings from your previous versionÆs
- installation. After Setup installs McAfee
- Firewall 4.0, you will need to (for
- example):
- - Activate McAfee Firewall using the
- Configuration Assistant
- - Identify the programs that you will
- allow (or not allow) to communicate
- - Configure your network adapterÆs
- settings
-
- The Configuration Assistant helps you
- configure the settings necessary to start
- and use McAfee Firewall. However, we do
- suggest that if you want to customize your
- settings to meet your needs, that you do so
- at your earliest convenience.
-
- - Reinstalling McAfee Firewall: Windows XP
- (Home and Professional)
-
- If you uninstall McAfee Firewall, you must
- restart your computer before you can
- reinstall the program.
-
- If you do not restart you computer, Setup
- will not be able to install the McAfee
- Firewall filter driver.
-
- - If you install McAfee Firewall 4.0 and then
- install an older version of any McAfee
- product, uninstalling McAfee Firewall 4.0
- may corrupt and render the older McAfee
- product ineffective. The older McAfee
- products affected are as follows:
- - McAfee Internet Security 4.x and
- older
- - Internet Guard Dog 3.0 and older
- - McAfee VirusScan 6.x and older
- - McAfee VirusScan Professional 6.x and
- older
- - McAfee QuickClean 2.x and older
- - McAfee Uninstaller 6.5 and older
- To remedy this problem:
- 1. Uninstall the older McAfee product.
- 2. Restart your computer.
- 3. Reinstall the older McAfee product.
-
- - There have been situations noted whereby
- Firewall behaves abnormally.
- Network communication traffic relies upon
- properly sequenced events. If the sequencing
- of IP packets is broken, FirewallÆs ability
- to block and allow traffic could cause a
- function to unexpectedly fail.
- A specific example of this type of
- unexpected behavior is as follows:
- (1) A program attempts to communicate and
- the connection type is a dial-up or
- login.
- (2) An alert message displays prompting
- the user allow or block the program.
- (3) The user selects allow access to the
- Internet.
- (4) Firewall does not allow the program
- to communicate because the sequence
- of events was broken.
-
- To remedy any of these situations, restart
- the application or function. Firewall allows
- the traffic because the user opted to allow
- the program to communicate.
-
- - Important Information Regarding Windows XP
- Migration:
- Upgrading your computer's operating system
- from any version of Windows to Windows XP
- causes all McAfee products installed before
- migration to become disabled after migration
- to Windows XP. You will be made aware of
- this issue as you make your first attempt to
- start a McAfee product (after migration) -
- you will be instructed to reinstall the
- product. Therefore, you will need to
- uninstall all McAfee products and reinstall
- using your installation CD or the software
- obtained from McAfee via download.
-
- You may be prompted to insert your
- installation CD or provide the location of
- your productÆs original installation files
- as you attempt to uninstall this product. If
- this does occur, click Browse to search for
- the original installation files. These can
- be found on your installation CD or, if you
- downloaded this product from our web site,
- in an installation directory located n your
- default hard disk (usually your c:\ drive).
-
- - To remove this program from your computer,
- to repair your installation, or to change
- its installation configuration, you must log
- in to your computer with a user-id that has
- administrative rights - if your computerÆs
- operating system is Windows 2000
- Professional or Windows XP [Home or
- Professional].
-
- - Windows XP installation issues:
- When you install a program on your Microsoft
- Windows XP-based computer, you may receive
- an error message similar to the following:
- Error 1606. Could not access network
- location <Common Administrative Tools>\All
- users\.
- This behavior can occur if there is an
- incorrect setting in the following registry
- entry:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
- CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders\
- Common Administrative Tools
- Use these steps to resolve this behavior:
- Caution: Incorrectly editing the registry
- may severely damage your system. Before
- making changes to the registry, you should
- back up any valued data on your computer.
- Before you edit the registry, make sure you
- understand how to restore it if a problem
- occurs. For information about how to do
- this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help
- topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a
- Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.
- (1) Click Start, and click Run.
- (2) In the Open box, type regedit, and click
- OK.
- (3) Locate and click (highlight) the
- following registry key:
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
- CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders
- (4) In the right pane of the Registry Editor
- window, double-click Common Administrative
- Tools.
- (5) In the Value data box of the Edit String
- dialog box that displays, type the following
- line, and then click OK:
- %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Start
- Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools
- (6) On the File menu, click Exit to quit
- Registry Editor.
- (7) Restart the computer.
- - Changing the color depth or color palette of
- your monitorÆs Display Settings to a
- 256-color mode while McAfee Firewall is
- running may cause the text on any Firewall
- window to be difficult to read. If this
- situation occurs, close McAfee Firewall by
- clicking the Windows close button [X].
- Restart McAfee Firewall.
-
- - VPN connectivity problems: Windows 9x
-
- If you experience connectivity problems
- after you install McAfee Firewall into a
- computer that uses Virtual Private
- Networking (VPN) software, please contact
- our Technical Support department. This issue
- only affects computers with a Windows 98 or
- Windows 98 SE operating system.
-
- - The Setup process, by default, configures
- NetBIOS over TCP as DISABLED. If NetBIOS
- over TCP is disabled, and your computer is a
- member of a network, then your computer will
- not be able to access the shares of other
- computers in your network, and other
- computers will not be able to access your
- computer's shares.
- The McAfee Firewall Configuration Assistant
- allows you to override the default settings.
- From the "Control Access to Shares" window,
- check the "Allow my computer to access other
- computers' shares" and "Allow other
- computers to access my shares" check boxes
- and click next.
-
- - To enable NetBIOS over TCP settings after
- completing setup, do the following.
- - Start McAfee Firewall.
- - Click Advanced Tasks.
- - From the McAfee Firewall Home page
- click Configure network adapters.
- - Select your computer's network adapter
- and click Adapter settings.
- - Select the "NetBIOS over TCP" tab.
- - Check the "Allow me to reach other
- systems shares" check box.
- - Check the "Allow other systems to
- reach my shares" check box.
- - Click Apply.
- - To disable NetBIOS over TCP, simply
- clear the appropriate check boxes
- described above.
-
- - For all Windows 2000 installations, McAfee
- Firewall requires a unique driver in order
- to function. During the installation
- process, you will be confronted with several
- warning messages notifying you that you are
- attempting to install an unsigned driver. To
- complete installation, allow setup to
- install the driver.
-
- - Insufficient Drive Space messages:
- Free drive space, in addition to the amount
- described under "System Requirements - MB of
- hard disk space", must be available to run
- Setup and install your McAfee product. The
- amount of additional space depends upon your
- computer's Operating System and its
- configuration. If, during setup, you receive
- an "insufficient drive space" message, exit
- setup and remove unnecessary files from your
- computer. Re-start Setup. Perform these
- steps as necessary until you do not receive
- an insufficient drive space message.
-
- - If the text displayed on the Autorun image
- is illegible; or appears in an
- unrecognizable font, there may be too many
- fonts installed in your computer.
-
- NOTE: The Autorun image presents you with an
- on-screen installation menu after you insert
- the McAfee installation CD into your
- computerÆs CD-ROM drive.
- To install this product, from your Windows
- Desk top, right-click My Computer and select
- Browse.
- Locate the following program file:
- <x>:\mfw\setup.exe. Here X represents the
- drive letter of your computerÆs CD-ROM
- drive. Double-click setup.exe to install
- McAfee Firewall. Refer to the steps
- displayed on the Installation Wizard to
- complete your installation.
-
- - Instant Updater is unable to determine the
- actions performed by the user after
- downloading a product upgrade. Product
- upgrades consist of patches and bug fixes,
- etc; and do not include incremental DATs
- (virus definition files). The upgrade
- process runs using a program that applies an
- upgrade independently of McAfee's Instant
- Updater tool. As such, Instant Updater's
- summary screen displays the same result:
- "successful" message, regardless of whether
- the user completes the upgrade process or
- not.
-
- - Instant Updater not properly installed.
-
- If the following error message displays:
- Error -103 (Instant Updater is not properly
- installed), please download and install
- Microsoft's updated XML parser.
- You can find the MSXML Parser 3.0 Service
- Pack 2 Release update at the following
- location (you can copy and paste this URL
- into the address bar of your Internet
- browser):
- If you continue to receive -103 errors after
- applying this Microsoft patch, the update
- may not have registered a file correctly.
- Therefore, please try the following:
- (1) From the Windows task bar, select Start
- > Run (The Run dialog displays).
-
- (2) In the Run dialog type the following:
- regsvr32 "%SystemRoot%\System32\msxml3.dll"
-
- NOTE: %SystemRoot% is a variable that refers
- to the default Windows\system directory.
- Windows 98/ME - Substitute c:\windows\system
- for '%SystemRoot%/System32'
-
- (3) Click OK.
- - You should receive a message that the
- DllRegisterServer succeeded. If you continue
- to receive -103 errors, please contact
- technical support.
-
- - The Instant Updater progress indicators do
- not display progress details after
- downloading updates.
-
- Although it appears that Instant Updater has
- stopped responding, please be patient and
- allow Instant Updater to complete the
- "Applying product upgrade" task.
-
- - AOL stops responding after updating.
-
- After you update this product, Instant
- Updater may prompt you to restart your
- computer. If you click "Yes" to restart your
- computer now and your computerÆs default
- browser is AOL, you may experience
- situations where your computer does not shut
- down. If you experience this situation,
- simply restart your computer to apply the
- updates.
-
- - Scenario:
- An attempt to update a McAfee product using
- Instant Updater returns the following error
- message:
- "Instant Updater was unable to communicate
- with the server. Please try again later.
- (-202)."
- This message displays in response to one of
- the following events:
- - The McAfee server is busy or not
- available:
- Solution: Try again later.
- - Instant Updater was unable to
- communicate with the server due to no
- Internet connection.
- Solution: Verify your computer
- maintains an Internet connection. If
- you are not connected, reconnect and
- try again.

- FQ1 - FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
-
- Q: What does McAfee Firewall do? How does it do
- it?
-
- A: McAfee Firewall filters traffic at the
- devices that your system uses - network cards
- and modems. This means that McAfee Firewall can
- reject inbound traffic before that traffic can
- reach vital functions in your PC and before it
- can waste valuable system resources.
-
- McAfee Firewall does this by monitoring
- applications that are either trusted or not
- trusted. When trusted applications need to
- access a network, McAfee Firewall manages
- everything in the computer to allow that
- application's traffic. When McAfee Firewall
- sees non-trusted applications trying to access
- a network, it blocks all traffic to and from
- that application. Some network communications
- are needed to maintain network-based services.
- These are managed through user-defined rules
- under the SYSTEM button. The default SYSTEM
- settings will provide protection from hostile
- threats. The installation routine will prompt
- with some basic questions to set up McAfee
- Firewall to do what you need (e.g. allow
- fileshares or not).
-
- Q: APPLICATION and SYSTEM: What do they mean?
-
- A: McAfee Firewall manages your network privacy
- through two large areas---APPLICATION traffic
- and SYSTEM traffic. APPLICATION traffic is
- based on trusting or not trusting applications
- that you know and use. SYSTEM traffic is more
- static and will allow or not allow things like
- fileshares and ICMP control) traffic.
-
- When you click on APPLICATION, you must choose
- whether you will automatically trust all
- applications or not. If you choose to trust all
- applications, everything that applications on
- your PC try to do will automatically be
- allowed. This is probably not a good thing to
- do, is it will open your PC to attack. If you
- choose to not trust applications, McAfee
- Firewall will begin to manage a "trusted" list
- and a "not trusted" list. You can always click
- on APPLICATION to see these lists and move
- known applications around.
-
- Once McAfee Firewall knows an application, it
- remembers it the next time the McAfee Firewall
- or the application in question is run. As new
- applications are run in the "not-trusted" mode,
- the system will prompt you for whether to trust
- this application or not.
-
- If McAfee Firewall asks you about an
- application that you know you are not currently
- running, or you do not have on your system,
- care should be taken in trusting it. Make
- certain you know what you are doing. While
- McAfee Firewall blocks the trojan horse, Back
- Oriface (BO), be default, it provides a good
- example of what might happen with other suspect
- applications. As BO attempted to run on your
- system and communicate out, McAfee Firewall
- would have captured this activity and asked you
- whether or not to trust it. It would have
- appeared to you as an application without an
- icon. Since you don't know what is happening,
- block it.
-
- System behavior is defined under the SYSTEM
- button on a per device basis. Each device can
- have its own behavior. For example, a network
- card may allow fileshares (sharing computer
- resources between trusted computers using the
- NetBIOS protocol); but that could be turned off
- over a modem to the Internet. The same applies
- to other basic services. For the most part, you
- need not concern yourself with protocols such
- as ARP, ICMP, NetBEUI and the like. If you need
- them, you probably know what they are.
-
- Q: What does the McAfee Firewall main window
- show?
-
- A: The MAIN window of McAfee Firewall (below
- the FILE, APPLICATION, SYSTEM, SYSTRAY and HELP
- tabs) shows activity that is live on your
- system. It also provides you with
- "radio-buttons" for global options like logging
- and overall behavior of McAfee Firewall.
-
- Q: What do SUMMARY and DETAIL mean?
-
- A: SUMMARY shows basic applications that are
- trusted or not trusted in the main window of
- McAfee Firewall. DETAIL splits the main window
- into a left-hand summary side and a right-hand
- detail side that describe the network activity
- on your system.
-
- Q: What is the left-hand side for in DETAIL
- mode?
-
- A: The left-hand sideshow the two major network
- activity areas in your system: APPLICATION
- traffic and SYSTEM traffic. It also shows red
- current activity icon and blue log icon (if
- logging is enabled). Note that this is similar
- to the window's appearance when running SUMMARY
- mode with the addition of the current activity
- and log icons.
-
- When there is activity in the application area,
- a "+" sign appears in front of the icon.
- Clicking on the "+" sign will make it a "-"
- sign and will show the applications that McAfee
- Firewall is currently monitoring. There is
- always a "+" or a "-" in front of the system
- and application icons. This works exactly the
- same way as Windows Explorer, except that
- McAfee Firewall presents activities and
- applications (not files and folders).
-
- Each application can also be in a closed,
- explicit or inactive state. If a "+" or "-"
- sign appears in front of an application, that
- application is doing something. Clicking on the
- "+" or "-" sign will cause it to change state.
- In the explicit state, the application traffic
- will show "real-time" with red (block) arrows
- or green (allow) arrows for traffic direction
- and an icon to show the type of traffic as well
- as IP address or system names for the traffic.
- Applications with a red "X" on them are
- untrusted applications.
-
- Q: What is the right-hand side for in DETAIL
- mode?
-
- A: The right-hand side shows details on items
- that are highlighted on the left-hand side.
-
- Q: What does an X on an application mean?
-
- A: An "X" means that the application is not
- trusted and is being blocked by McAfee
- Firewall.
-
- Q: What do the little + and - signs mean and
- how do I use them? As described in above, the
- "+" and "-" indicate activity in an item. The
- "+" sign is a closed state and shows not
- details. When the "+" sign is clicked, it
- becomes a "-" sign and represents an explicit
- state that shows details on the left-hand side
- of the main window.
-
- Q: Network Control Buttons: What do they do?
-
- A: The NETWORK CONTROL buttons are at top left
- of the McAfee Firewall application window. They
- determine the overall behavior of McAfee
- Firewall. Only one button can be selected at a
- time here: The first BLOCK ALL button will
- cause all traffic to be blocked regardless of
- any options chosen anywhere else. The second
- FILTER button will cause all traffic to be
- processed as defined by options chosen
- elsewhere in McAfee Firewall. The final ALLOW
- ALL button will cause all traffic to be
- allowed, regardless of options chosen elsewhere
- in McAfee Firewall. This is a permissive mode
- and effectively turns off all protection
- provided by McAfee Firewall.
-
- Q: Display Buttons: What do they do?
-
- A: The DISPLAY buttons are in the top middle of
- the McAfee Firewall application window. They
- determine the single screen or split screen
- nature of the main portion of the McAfee
- Firewall window.
-
- Q: Auto Start: How can McAfee Firewall run
- automatically when I start my PC?
-
- A: This option is enabled by default as you
- complete the Configuration Assistant. To change
- FirewallÆs startup options, from the Firewall
- Home page, click the Set startup options task
- from Tasks list. On the Set Startup Options
- screen, check or clear the check from the
- "Start McAfee Firewall automatically" check
- box. To save your changes, click OK.
-
- If you do not want McAfee Firewall to start as
- your computer starts, clear the Start McAfee
- Firewall automatically check box.
-
- Q: Network traffic: Why does McAfee Firewall
- shut off existing network traffic when it is
- launched?
-
- A: McAfee Firewall is a security product. If
- you suspect you are under attack, launching
- McAfee Firewall will quickly and effectively
- terminate hostile network traffic. Any
- applications that you were running before
- launching McAfee Firewall will now be
- monitored.
-
- TIPS:
- - Having stated the above, we recommend
- that you configure McAfee Firewall to
- start as Windows starts.
-
- - Your Internet dialup connection is closed
- as McAfee Firewall closes. McAfee
- Firewall forces you to disconnect and
- reconnect to the Internet when you
- attract hostile attention. Reconnecting
- to the Internet assigns your PC a new IP
- address. Thus, if you were being attacked
- when you shut down McAfee Firewall, the
- attacker would need to locate your
- computer before resuming the attack.
-
- - Make certain your McAfee Firewall is
- always active when connected to other
- systems. We recommend that McAfee
- Firewall be run upon system startup and
- remain on during your entire session.

- AD1 - ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
-
- - McAfee Firewall support for Home Networking
-
- For more in formation about how McAfee
- Firewall supports Home Networking, please
- visit our support Web site on the Internet
- at www.mcafeehelp.com.
-

-
- - Miscellaneous online Help issues resolved.

- formatting corrected.
-
- - Instant Updater is unable to determine the
- actions performed by the user after
- downloading a product upgrade. Product
- upgrades consist of patches and bug fixes,
- etc; and do not include incremental DAT's
- (virus definition files). The upgrade
- process runs using a program that applies an
- upgrade independently of McAfee's Instant
- Updater tool. As such, Instant Updater's
- summary screen displays the same result
- "successful" message, regardless of whether
- the user completes the upgrade process or
- not.
-
- - By design, for all NT based Windows
- operating systems (NT, 2000 and XP), users
- logged in as a restricted user are unable to
- configure advanced Firewall settings.
